Big Red One's campaign follows this chronological path, putting you in the shoes of a fresh-faced private in Fox company. The unit became known as one of America's fiercest and most courageous fightin g units in World War II, serving tours of duty in North Africa, sweeping up through Italy, landing on Normandy, and pushing across the European continent into Germany. The subtitle, Big Red One, refers to the United States' Army's 1st Infantry Division, whose exploits are chronicled in the game's 13-mission campaign. Big Red One is the US Army's 1st Division. While it's a definite improvement on Activision's last Call of Duty game for consoles, Big Red One still doesn't do quite enough to distinguish itself from numerous other World War II first-person shooters. Big Red One for the Xbox, PlayStation 2, and GameCube is an entirely different game from the PC and Xbox 360 versions. Though Call of Duty 2: Big Red One shares its name with another game released on the PC-and soon to be released on the Xbox 360-you shouldn't confuse the two. If I could give this game a 4.5/5, I would. They must have been shooting blanks because it seemed as though they never took down any of the enemy troops on their own. They were often in my way and would tend to shoot in to walls. The only problem I experienced would have to be my fellow soldiers A.I. The ground and tactical battles were my favorite though. One feature I really enjoyed was commanding the gun turrets aboard an airplane and a tank. Buildings exploding and bullets flying just over my head. Many of the battles quickened my pulse and immersed me completely into the action. The graphics were stunning and choice of vehicles proved top notch. My motivation was furthered by the Greatest Hits pricing ($19.99).ĬoD2 is by far the best WW2 first person shooter I have played to date (having played many brands). Having played and enjoying the first Call of Duty game on the Playstation 2, I was psyched to play the second in this series. As in an actual firefight, blindly storming an enemy location with guns blazing is seldom the best way to win battles in Call of Duty 2, but enhanced squad commands allow wise soldiers outmaneuver nearly any opponent, through tactics and teamwork. This sense of trust may even carry over to the battlefield, where communication and cooperation are critical. In addition to a vigorous campaign that leads them past grim landmarks of war-torn Europe and Northern Africa, players are given an opportunity for some light role-playing, as the game's story encourages them to bond with their fellow soldiers. Players take the role of a soldier among its ranks. As many real-life veterans and history buffs will recognize, the sequel's subtitle is an affectionate name for the United States Army's most decorated division, First Infantry. First-person shooter enthusiasts are drafted back to the European theatre of World War II, in Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, the follow-up to 2004's successful Call of Duty: Finest Hour.
